Is Dubai Worth Visiting? The $214,000 Answer

Dubai is one of the most polarizing travel destinations. Critics call it artificial, soulless, and overpriced. Fans call it the most impressive city on earth. After spending $214,000 across 15 visits, I have a more nuanced take.

The Case For Dubai

The hotels. Dubai has the best concentration of luxury hotels in the world. The Atlantis The Royal, Burj Al Arab, Bulgari Resort, and Mandarin Oriental Jumeira are all in a different category from anything in Europe or North America.

The dining. Dubai's restaurant scene has matured into one of the world's best. Trèsind Studio, Nobu, Ossiano — the quality of fine dining now rivals Paris and Tokyo.

The service. Hotel service in Dubai is the best in the world. Staff are attentive, professional, and genuinely warm. This is not a small thing.

The weather (October–April). When it is cold and grey in London, New York, or Paris, Dubai offers guaranteed sunshine and 25–30°C temperatures.

The tax advantage. Because of zero VAT on most services and zero income tax, Dubai offers luxury at more accessible prices than comparable destinations.

The Case Against

The artificiality. Everything in Dubai is built — the islands, the ski slope, the beaches. If you value authentic, organic experiences, Dubai will feel manufactured.

The summer heat. June–September is genuinely unpleasant. 40–45°C makes outdoor activity impossible. If you visit in summer, you are confined to air-conditioned spaces.

The crowds. Dubai's popularity means that everywhere is busy. Top restaurants book 3–4 weeks in advance. Popular hotels are sold out in peak season.

The lack of culture. Dubai has limited traditional culture. The museums are underwhelming. The historic districts are pleasant but small. This is not a city for cultural tourism.
